First off, what is activated charcoal?
Activated charcoal is a matter made from burning carbon sources (in this case coconut shells🌴) which eliminates all oxygen. This in turn activates the charcoal with gases (like steam.) The result is a remarkably adsorbent material that inhabits millions of minuscule pores. These pores can bind to and expunge up to 100X the charcoal’s weight in poisons and toxins. The porous surface has a negative electric charge that pulls positively-charged toxins to itself; in order to be seamlessly expelled out of the body.
In short, it is a natural detoxing aid.
🌿Relieve gas, bloating, indigestion, and diarrhea
🌿Counteract poison and accidental overdose (drugs, chemicals, heavy metals, and the like)
🌿Pull poison out of bug bites, poison ivy, oak, cholera and inflammation.
🌿Rid breath and body of unpleasant odor
🌿Slow down aging process (slows down cellular maturation associated with aging, kidney, and adrenal function)
🌿Polish and whiten teeth
I’m sure you have seen on social media at some point or another videos showing significant changes in teeth shades using activated charcoal.
Many claim to take years worth of stains off– even after the first or second use. 🙌🏽
I had been wanting to try activated charcoal for whitening forever but I didn’t know which one to choose. I fangirled over Instagram posts doing eeny meeny miny moe for a couple of days before deciding on two of the most commonly advertised charcoal teeth whiteners online:
Purity Smiles and Carbon Coco.
Purity Smiles came in the mail first and so I started using it daily.
I didn’t buy the special toothbrush that Purity Smiles recommends, but I had one coming with Carbon Coco and so waited patiently. I didn’t notice a significant change after a week but was experiencing a little bit of tooth and gum sensitivity. Although the powder looked soft and fine, it felt too abrasive using my normal toothbrush. I may have been brushing too hard and tried to ease up.
Coco carbon was better for me and was worth the wait.
It took 9 weekdays to come in with free untracked shipping. (13 days including weekends) The toothbrush included is soft and gentle and the tooth powder itself is very fine and non-abrasive.
I got the toothpaste as well, which is refreshingly minty and extremely foamy. In fact, I could use even less than shown here. What’s interesting is that although the tooth powder remains dark, the toothpaste turns white as soon as you start brushing.
I noticed a slightly brighter smile after my first use.
I had been using Purity Smiles for over a week with no substantial results. However, I was using my own toothbrush and that could absolutely be a factor, as well as the fact that I had been using some sort of activated charcoal and it could have just been about the timing.
However, what I liked most about Carbon Coco is that they are very transparent about their ingredients and realistic results. From the videos, I thought I would experience exceptional improvement the first try. This was not the case with Purity Smiles but I didn’t know why. In the package, Carbon Coco tells you that it can take up to 2 weeks to notice results and although I don’t mind waiting, I appreciated knowing this upfront. I didn’t receive a disclaimer from Purity Smiles.
To this day, I don’t know if the reason Carbon Coco worked so well was because of the accompanying toothpaste and toothbrush or the charcoal itself.
Or, if it just so happened that the number of days it took for improvement happened to be when I started with them. I have years of stains worked into these teeth (coffee drinker, tea drinker, ex-wine drinker, ex-smoker) so maybe it would require 3 weeks to see results no matter which brand I used.
If it didn’t wow me, why do I use it?
Although I didn’t get the glowing white smile I was looking for, I did gain a lot from this stuff and will continue using it because:
1. Better Habits
This stuff is messy. It turns your tongue black and the powder gets stuck in your teeth and gums. I know that sounds like a negative but I actually have this to thank.
Because of this, I started becoming especially meticulous with my flossing habits and tongue brushing regimen. If I didn’t, I’d look like I had rotting teeth 😂😅 but I started noticing how much I used to rush (or skip altogether) the flossing. I learned there were spots I was missing altogether. This taught me better oral hygiene habits that I carry with me even when I skip the charcoal.
2. Fresher Breath (that lasts)
I started noticing that when I used this daily, my breath stayed fresher for hours longer than with normal brushing alone. If I used it before bed, I could tell a difference even in the morning. Nothing can completely rid morning breath–guys come on; but this improved it. Says my husband 😂
3. Easy Daily Detox Regimen
Our mouths are one of the dirtiest parts of our bodies and harbor a lot of bacteria. It also can be a huge indicator of our overall health. Taking care of our mouth and teeth is important for our bodies and overall wellbeing. Using activated charcoal is an easy way to detox daily without a fuss.
If you don’t want to brush with it, you can swish coconut oil and charcoal in your mouth for a few minutes as a detoxing rinse in order to gain the same benefits. Just make sure to spit into the trash can and not sink, as to not clog pipes. 🙂
Taking activated charcoal orally is an even easier option for daily detoxing.
