It’s been a long time since I’ve written a review…if you read my last entry or my post on Instagram, then you know life has been a beautiful whirlwind and I had taken some time away from this little corner of the internet.
I came back to comments and emails from a handful of you, asking me about any updates on my perioral dermatitis.
I’m so sorry it took me so long to get back to you guys, I know one of the worst things to happen when you reach out to someone in a state of panic or desperation is to hear nothing but crickets. I feel like that always happened to me and I feel horrible about that.
Hopefully this will help.
One small family company called Lyonsleaf, based in in the UK, reached out to me a couple of months ago to tell me about some of their products.
They had found me through my posts on perioral dermatitis and wanted to reach out to see if their products could help me. This company carefully researched me and could see that their approach to healing was completely in alignment with my own individual needs and values. I really appreciated that.
What impressed me the most was their level of detail in research and care regarding dermatitis.
Many of you may have already been duped by products because they market towards those with skin conditions and issues, making claims to heal your skin, but they aren’t truly natural, nor do they have a true understanding of underlying issues.
The creators, Ben and Vicky, struggled with skin sensitivities, eczema, and reactions to mainstream products themselves, and therefore created their own natural line.
I was blown away by their detailed explanations and research regarding specific needs of delicate and troubled skin and dermatitis. They highlight skin barrier function, emollients (which ones to avoid, such as mineral oil and why, and which ones that will nourish and heal your skin,) their approach to natural healing, and then go into great detail about how skincare alone may not heal dermatitis:
“CHRONIC DERMATITIS TREATMENT
If you are struggling to manage your dermatitis it is important that you do that detective work to find your personal triggers or causes. Treating your skin may not be enough. We recommend keeping a diary, recording the food you eat, substances you come into contact with like cleaning products or beauty products and your emotional state, whether you feel stressed, happy or had an argument etc. It is useful for women to note their menstrual cycle too. If you record any symptoms and flare-ups too, you may soon see patterns appearing that will help you identify the cause of your dermatitis.” —Lyonsleaf
Do you know how many companies admit that? Practically zero.
This is something I have tried to stress to anyone who reaches out to me regarding perioral dermatitis–unfortunately there isn’t a magic potion that will take it away immediately and indefinitely. It is internal as well, and so you must work to discover your triggers and heal yourself from the inside out, continuously. Skincare helps to heal and protect the skin, but ultimately if you continue to expose yourself to the things that trigger the rash, it will continue to come back. I firmly believe it is gut related and know personally that I am triggered by very specific foods (I’ve detailed this here.) At any rate, the fact that this company was very open about that, not making false claims, it made me trust them even more and I was delighted to try their products.
Lyonsleaf is founded by a regular family that learned through trial and error all on their own, using their ingredients from their personal farm.
Guys, I love that. I love that they truly understand the struggles involved and care about their consumers, individually, not just as a number in their bank. I love the care they take in their ingredients used, and have made it their mission to spread their healing.
UPDATE: If you are in the US, ordering from their actual website is super pricey with shipping costs, but I found this website called Lovelula which ships free worldwide and cuts the cost significantly. I’ll be repurchasing the Beauty Balm and Zinc cream when they run out through this site.
What I Tried:
🌿Lyonsleaf Natural Beauty Balm + Flannel Bale for Oil Cleansing
🌿Zinc and Calendula Cream
🌿Calendula and Marshmallow Balm
*In order to give a true review, I tested these products for a month before writing this. After daily use, I really have fallen in love with this line and hoping to eventually find it here in the U.S. It does what it claims, especially for the slight flare ups that I’ve been experiencing with pregnancy.
Natural Beauty Balm + Flannel Bale for Oil Cleansing:
Oil Cleansing Complete Kit – £22.50 0r $28.85
If you’re unfamiliar, oil cleansing involves using an oil/butter based product that works by melting away makeup, dirt, and impurities; leaving behind a veil of moisture and nutrients for your skin. The idea is that if you have oily skin, then gels, scrubs, and cleansers actually strip your skin of its natural sebum levels, causing your body to create an overproduction in order to compensate. If you use oils that are not clogging, they will cleanse the skin, exfoliate safely, remove old sebum and re-balance the skin’s sebum levels gently and effectively to eventually solve the overproduction altogether. Alternatively, if you have dry skin, the oils will cleanse the skin as well, but fulfill the skin’s depleted production and soothe, heal, and re-balance as well.
If you struggle with perioral dermatitis, then you know that your skin can at times be both dry, flaky, and oily, and so it is a paradox that is difficult to treat with skincare. Oil cleansing helps to re-balance all of that.
Formula + Scent:
The consistency of this balm is decadent and thick, and has such a natural, soothing scent filled with essential oils. 🙏🏽🌿✨ The product does not include water or fillers and is purely comprised of healing butters and oils that penetrate and regenerate the skin.
Completely Natural Ingredients + Transparency:
You can click on almost every single ingredient in order to get a breakdown of their researched, thoughtfully included properties. For the full list, click here.
What I like:
🌿Babassu Oil– has anti–inflammatory properties, skin emollient, protectant, natural healing properties, soothing for skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, or dermatitis.
🌿Macadamia Nut Oil– High in fatty acids. The Linoleic Acid (Omega 6) in Macadamia nut oil helps to restore the skin’s barrier function and reduce water loss. Healing properties and anti-aging.
🌿Jojoba Oil– Mimics the natural sebum of skin, nutritive, and has anti-aging properties. Jojoba oil can also accelerate the wound-healing process, proven in a study completed at the Department of Environment and Life Sciences in Italy. The results showed that jojoba oil speeds up wound closures and stimulates collagen synthesis
🌿Patchouli Oil– stops fungal growth, reduces inflammation, heals skin conditions
Application + Thoughts:
This cleanser definitely does what it claims. It removes stubborn makeup and leaves my skin feeling supple, smooth, and moisturized. I take a small bit and apply it to my skin, taking special care around my eye area (where makeup can be stubborn.) With warm water, I use one of the cloths to smooth over my skin and remove makeup, dirt, and impurities. My skin isn’t left feeling stripped at all, and oftentimes I don’t even add more of the cleansing balm to moisturize. For a more abrasive scrub, I like using the face flannels, for a more gentle exfoliation, the muslin cloths work best.
Zinc + Calendula Cream
30ml of cream is £8.99 – $11.53 USD
Vicky was incredible while corresponding with me. She let me know that she included a 30ml Zinc and Calendula Cream, which can be used as required to sooth PD – once or twice a day or just occasionally. She included a disclaimer that zinc can be drying, so if I started off using it twice daily and my skin became dry, to reduce application or stop for a while. I thought that was so amazing of her to take that time to share that because it truly showed not only her care to her consumers, but her understanding of the products in relation to the skin conditions they were made for.
- Rebalances skin that is prone to produce excess sebum
- Creates a barrier to protect fragile or damaged skin when washing-up or bathing.
- Unfragranced, suitable for infants and those with very sensitive skin.
What I like:
🌿Anti-inflammatory– Reduces redness significantly, and I haven’t experienced severe drying and do use it twice a day.
🌿 Zinc creates a lightening effect which dulls redness, especially around my nose area.
🌿Relief from flaking skin by end of the day.
🌿Cost Effective– A little bit lasts! I only need to use the tip of my finger to get a small veil of cream, so this container will last forever.
🌿Clean ingredients– zero fillers, synthetics, or irritants. You can read the full ingredient list here.
This stuff zaps out the red and truly does help with flare ups. I’ve never thought to put zinc on my face but this does help tremendously and I would recommend giving it a try for those areas that become the most inflamed during flare ups.
CALENDULA AND MARSHMALLOW BALM
120 ml of Balm is £22.50 – $28.85 USD
When I let Vicky know that I was pregnant, she was so sweet and thoughtful to include this into my care package. The Calendula and Marshmallow Balm soothes, softens, repairs, and improves skin’s elasticity— perfect for preventing stretch marks.
Like all of their products, it doesn’t include any fillers, water, or anything but decadent butters that create such a rich and creamy feel. I can use such a little bit to melt into my hands and rub it all over my tummy, sides, chest, and thighs— all areas I know are stretching and growing rapidly now. I have made my own butters using coconut oil and shea butter, but I love this consistency so much more and appreciate the added ingredients.
It truly leaves my skin feeling so hydrated and smooth and I look forward to using this after my showers and before bed each day. I’ve even used it as a lip balm or to help with dryness around my eyes, with the changing weather and am happy to report that since using this product, I have yet to spy a new stretch mark. I can report back after the baby comes and my tummy snaps back. 🙂
I love these products, I love this company, their story, and everything they stand for.
Honestly, when my skin was at its worst, I wish I would have known about this brand.
They offer countless of high-quality skincare options, specifically targeting perioral dermatitis, rosacea, and eczema, as well as hair care, baby care, and more. Because they do not contain fillers or water, they are super condensed products that are made to last…Even more, they still curate handmade products in small-batches, ensuring the highest quality with organic, wild-harvested ingredients that will not only heal your irritated skin, but protect it from the elements and signs of aging.
If you are currently struggling with finding a natural skincare routine that doesn’t irritate your perioral dermatitis, I’d definitely give this a try because I’m confident you’d see results, in combination with a good probiotic and dietary changes.
My skin has been doing great since my cravings have decreased now that I am in my 3rd trimester, and I am back to taking my probiotic daily. However, I will update a picture of what these products do the next time I get a flare up so you can see for yourself.
I have had slight redness occasionally by my nose and the zinc cream has taken care of that super quickly! The rest of the line is so nutritive for daily maintenance as well.
P.S. Lovelula is a website that ships free worldwide if you spend $20 (or £15)
Although they are based in the UK, they do deliver to the United States, and very quickly! Don’t be afraid to reach out to them, if you reach out to the creator, Vicky, she will get back to you personally for any questions or concerns you might have.💛✨😊
Love and light.
